AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) structures content to surface as the direct answer to specific queries in AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) builds the entity authority and citation infrastructure that causes large language models to reference a brand or organization when generating answers across an entire category.
AEO and GEO are not the same discipline. Most practitioners use them interchangeably. The precise distinction, what each requires, how each is measured, and the right sequence for building both.
The Difference
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of structuring content so that answer engines (Google's AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, Perplexity, ChatGPT when browsing) surface it as the direct answer to a specific question. The primary mechanism is question-matching: content structured to precisely match the phrasing and intent of a high-volume query.
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the practice of building the entity authority, citation infrastructure, and earned media presence that causes large language models to reference a brand, person, or organization when generating answers across a broad category. The primary mechanism is citation weight: how often and how authoritatively an entity is referenced in the training data and retrieval layer that AI engines draw from.
AEO is a content tactic. GEO is a communications discipline. AEO asks: does this page answer this question? GEO asks: does this entity own this category in the answer layer?
What Each Requires
AEO requirements: Question-shaped headlines and subheads. Concise, directly stated answers in the first paragraph. FAQ schema markup. Structured content that matches the query format (how-to, definition, comparison, list). Freshness signals — regularly updated content performs better in AI Overview selection.
GEO requirements: Entity documentation across multiple independent sources. Earned media in publications that AI engines use as training anchors. Structured authority signals — schema markup, author bylines in credentialed publications, primary research. Internal linking that maps the entity's territory. Consistency of brand narrative across owned and earned channels.
How Each Is Measured
AEO measurement: Appearance rate in AI Overviews for target queries. Position in answer (cited vs. not cited). Traffic from AI Overview clicks (declining as a share but still measurable). The metric is binary and query-specific: does this content appear for this question?
GEO measurement: Citation Share — the percentage of relevant AI answers in a category in which the entity is named, quoted, or linked. Source mapping — which publications the engines cite on category queries. Entity sentiment — how the entity is characterized when it appears. The metric is comparative and category-level: does this entity own the answer?
The Right Sequence
AEO can produce quick wins on specific high-volume queries — structured FAQ content can surface in Google AI Overviews within weeks of publication. GEO is a longer arc: entity authority builds over months of consistent earned media, structured documentation, and citation compounding.
The right sequence: AEO first for specific query ownership, GEO in parallel for category authority. Neither replaces the other. An entity that optimizes only for AEO owns individual answers but doesn't build the broader authority that makes the entity the default reference when buyers research the category. An entity that invests only in GEO builds category authority that AI engines trust — but may miss specific high-intent query opportunities in the short term.
